Lofi is the abbreviation for “low fidelity,” a low-quality recording with imperfections such as hum, background noise, limited frequency response, vinyl cracks, and harmonic distortion. Lofi music is a style similar to downtempo and lofi hip-hop, with parts of lounge, house, and jazz. Lofi highlights the imperfections of flawed analog recordings, with a gritty and grainy audio quality and a retro sound that is ideal for background music.

Students use lofi music worldwide to help them study. The brain perceives flaws in the music and triggers the cerebrum. The hum and flaws in lofi can produce effects on the brain that release positive emotions to help enhance relaxation and concentration. Lofi will help if you can’t focus or sit still. Scientific research showed that lofi music is helpful to students as well as adults.

Lofi is used in music therapy to help patients take control of their soundscape. Lofi beats are listened to on a repeated loop that helps to create a relaxing effect. The repetition makes it predictable, causing our brains to relax and allowing us to focus.
